Cake Classes

Student Creations:
Please keep in mind that most of these cakes were created by first time cakers. None of these students had used fondant on a cake before taking this class. Aren't they awesome? This teacher is proud!
Teaching Background Information:
Jennifer earned her Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies and her Master's Degree in Instructional Communication. She is currently earning her Ph.D. in Interpersonal & Instructional Communication and has been teaching communication courses at the University level for nearly a decade. Her training in communication and education allow for a very professional and fun class environment.

While students in her cake classes do not do formal course evaluations (as in her typical communication classrooms), previous caking students have all left proud of their amazing cake creations and have consistently asked to take future cake classes at Salt Cake City.

Cake Class #1: Caking for Beginners
Whether you're a first time caker or a buttercream queen, this cake class is fun and full of caking basics, tips, and techniques. While the class is focused on using marshmallow fondant, you will also learn:

- the tools necessary to make a beautiful cake
- where to get caking tools for cheap
- how to make marshmallow fondant
- how to torte cakes
- how to frost a cake with buttercream
- how to cover a cake in fondant
- various fondant decorations created with a number of techniques
- how to decorate and complete your cake creation

In this class, you will be provided with a detailed binder of all of the information covered in class along with a wealth of information on techniques, and a wide range of cake and frosting recipes. Lastly, you will take your cake home to show off your hard work and to enjoy with friends and family.

The class generally lasts around 3-hours but the timing will vary depending on how long students spend decorating their creations. This class is 100% hands-on with all materials supplied from beginning to end which means you show up with some energy and leave with new knowledge, a binder for more information, and your very own cake. There are only five student spots available (ages 12 and up) for each class so that you get personalized training and attention. If you have a group of at least four friends or family that are interested, we can set up a personal cake class just for you, otherwise, feel free to email for dates and times of upcoming cake classes.

A $20 deposit is needed to hold your spot in class. The remainder of the fee ($80) is due when you come to class.

Cake Class #2: Topsy Turvy Cakes
For those who are more advanced and willing to take on the challenge, I offer a second level of caking classes on how to assemble and decorate a topsy turvy cake. You know, the kind that looks like it's falling over? In this class, you will:

- Make and assemble a two-tiered topsy turvy cake
- Make marshmallow fondant to cover & decorate your cake
- Discuss the different methods of making a topsy cake (we will focus on one method in particular but it's important for you to know the difference types available)
- Torte and frost your cakes (frosting a topsy cake is trickier than a flat cake)
- Stack your tiered cake successfully using proper support structures (which are used in any tiered cake structure)
- Make marbelized fondant, inlays, streamers, and shooting stars that can be used to decorate your cake
- Decorate the 2-tiered cake with the fondant decorations you make in class
- Just as the last class, you will get a detailed binder with all of the information covered in class along with a whole new set of recipes to take home and try

This class is 100% hands-on and all materials are supplied for you. Generally, the class is 4 to 4.5 hours long and is a more challenging course with a higher level of difficulty. Just as the first class, there are only 4-5 spots available so that you can get personalized training. Come ready with any questions you have and we can work through them all in class. Because of the added difficulty and amount of cake, the class is $125 and a $20 deposit is needed to hold your spot in class.
