Frequently Asked Questions
How do I order a cake or cupcakes?
We prefer cake orders to be placed over email so that we can make sure to keep all of the details in written form. Orders placed over phone are sometimes used when time permits. The most important piece of information is the date of your event. We have limited space and so we book our cakes on a first come, first serve basis, so we must check to see if your date is available. Also, please have an idea of how big you’d like the cake to be (how many people will you want to feed with this cake?). Feel free to email us with any ideas of designs and styles that you have in mind. We encourage you to send photos of other cakes or inspirations that we can use to help design a unique cake for you. We will also ask for detailed contact information, event information, preferred pick-up or delivery times. For cakes over $100, a non-refundable deposit to reserve your date is needed. There is a minimum order of a 6-inch cake or a dozen cupcakes.
How far in advance should I place my order?
We can only accommodate a limited number of cakes, depending on the complexity of the orders, so we suggest that you reserve your date as soon as possible. Most of our cakes are booked three weeks to several months in advance. We recommend all cake orders be placed at least one or two weeks in advance.
What are your cake prices?
All of our cakes are unique and customized to fit your needs and so we do not have set prices for the cakes on our website. Cakes are priced according to several different criteria. Our base prices are $4.00 per serving for round or square cakes and $5.50 per serving for shaped cakes but keep in mind that our wedding serving sizes are larger than most traditional bakeries. Factors that add to the price include intricate fondant decorations, painting, or other time consuming design elements, and delivery. Price estimates will be provided when orders are placed, but final prices are not set until the design is completed.
Do you require a deposit for cake orders?
Yes, if the cake is estimated to cost over $100. We require a non-refundable deposit of $100 in order to hold your date. Cakes must be paid in full one week before the date of delivery/pick-up. If you are using one of our cake bases or platforms for your cake display, there is a mandatory $75 deposit that will be returned to you if the cake base is returned to Salt Cake City within one week (7 days) from the date the cake is due. If not returned within 7 days, the $75 deposit is no longer refundable. We do this because we love our cake bases and we don't charge a rental fee like most cakeries. This is our only way to be sure that we get our products back in the best of conditions.
Where can I find information on each cake you've made?
My cake blog has a ton of information on each cake as well as tips for your caking experiences. Feel free to check it out atwww.SaltCakeCity.blogspot.
What type of payment do you accept?
For now, we take cash, check, or direct bank transfer. There is a $25 fee for bounced checks.
Do you deliver or ship cakes?
Yes, we can deliver and set up your cake. No, we do not ship cakes. Delivery prices are calculated according to total travel distance. Generally, delivery and set up to:
- Salt Lake City is around $35-45
- Bountiful, Cottonwood & Millcreek Canyons, and Orem are around $45-60
- Layton and Park City are around $60-70
Please contact me for specific prices on delivery.
There is no charge for pick up orders, however, every 30 minutes that you are late to pick up a cake, there is a $10 late charge. (Sorry! I can't wait around all day :)
How do I schedule a cake tasting?
Cake tastings are available for cakes estimated to be over $175. There is no charge for a cake tastings, which includes up to three cake flavors of your choice. Additional flavors may also be requested for $7 each. Prompt arrival at the cake tasting is necessary and you can bring up to two guests with you but please leave the children at home so we can finalize all of the important details.
What is fondant?
Most of our cakes are covered in homemade marshmallow fondant, which is a sugar dough made from powdered sugar and marshmallows. If you’ve ever had fondant on another cake, you know how badly traditional fondant tastes. Marshmallow fondant, on the other hand, tastes delicious and looks just as great as regular fondant. We cover our cakes in buttercream before covering them in a thin layer of marshmallow fondant. Our marshmallow fondant looks great, tastes great, and locks in the moisture of the cake. For those of you who think you don't like fondant, we encourage you to please try ours.
Do you make sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan cakes?
Cake is essentially sugar mixed with sugar, iced with sugar and then covered in sugar. Unfortunately, we do not make any cakes that are sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan at this time. Additionally, we are unable to accommodate anyone with strict nut allergies. Allergies can be very serious and we use products that are manufactured around nut and dairy products.
Are you hiring or looking for help?
At this time, we are not hiring or accepting any interns.
I'd love to learn how to make cakes. Do you teach cake classes?
Yes! Other than caking, teaching is my passion and so combining the two for caking classes is the perfect pairing. I am offering classes that anyone can sign up for or alternatively, I offer personalized classes for just you and your friends. Classes are limited to 4 or 5 students to ensure one-on-one training. The beginner's class generally last around 3 to 3 1/2 hours and the advanced classes are around 4 to 4 1/2 hours. They are all 100% hands-on so that you can learn through experience. If you are serious about learning how to cake or are just looking for a fun activity for you and some friends, please send me an email at SaltCakeCity@gmail.com for dates on our classes.

A Few Real Testimonials:
Pink & Orange Topsy Wedding Cake: "Jennifer Hill created the most amazing cake I have ever seen or tasted for our wedding. Her business is Salt Cake City and her cakes are mind blowing. After our initial taste test I dreamed about her cakes and cupcakes (which she filled with delicious cream) for weeks afterwards. She has a huge list of flavors to choose from and I wish we could have sampled them all because some of the flavors are non-traditional and quite interesting. In my opinion, the coolest part of her cakes is her fondant which she makes from marshmallows so it actually tastes good! After tasting 6 delicious cakes we decided to go with two flavors, red velvet and coconut cream. I have always wanted a topsy-turvy cake and I was fairly specific on how I wanted the cake to be decorated. She sent me numerous sketches and we came up with my dream cake! It was perfect and absolutely delicious." - Stephanie E.
